Ray G. Bowl XIII – Faculty Win 13th Annual Ray G Bowl Faculty vs. Senior Flag Football Game

Ben Rios Field, Thursday, January 10, 2013

Mr. Neuschwanger, Spanish teacher and Faculty team captain said he was

“It was evident that losing the ‘Soft Bowl’ game (faculty vs. senior softball game) left a bitter taste in the faculty’s mouth. (On Thursday, Jan. 10) on Ben Ríos Memorial Field, the faculty rebounded and triumphed once again in the annual renewal of what has come to be known as ‘Ray G. Bowl,’” Neuschwanger said.  “We have raised nearly $1000 so far.  Lifted by the quick feet and sure hands of two fabulous rookies, the faculty marched their opening possession down the field and never looked back.”

Mr. Neuschwanger provided nicknames for the faculty members who competed in the game.

Mr. Quite Wright (Lukas Wright, SPX security) and Ice Ice Berger (Peter Berger, strength and conditioning for boy’s basketball) provided the joy and energy of youth the faculty needed.  “H-Bomb Hilton (Mark Hilton, physical education and baseball and football coach)  and Mad Man Mendoza (San Juan Mendoza, physical education and head football coach) once again provided veteran leadership for the faculty.  The seniors rallied after a 21-7 deficit at halftime to tie the game at 21. However, the class of 2013 fell short losing the 13th edition of the game, 28-21.

A special thanks to Ron Tybor, Bob Shields and Jim Cook for officiating, Mr. García for running the scoreboard, to Mr. Kovarik for singing the U.S.  National Anthem, Elisa Machtinger, Dow and Sheila Jennings for providing insightful commentary during the game. A thanks to Mike Mares, Ryan Tomari and Josh Herrera for collecting the funds you so graciously contributed and to Karen Sluder for counting it to David Sullivan, Ashley Turcotte and Juanita Márquez and sports medicine for setting up and taking down the field.

Next stop Dodge Bowl ( Faculty vs Student dodgeball game).

New Ben Rios Scoreboard Dedicated

The scoreboard for the Ben Rios Field was dedicated on Oct. 2 in a ceremony with the family of Ben Rios and some of the contributors to the scoreboard project. Jim Cook recognized the many contributors to the scoreboard and especially thanked Mayor Richard and Maria Berry, parents of sophomore Jacob, for their major contribution to the scoreboard. Maria '82 was also a scholar-athlete at St. Pius.

Jorge Tristani, former soccer coach, remembered Ben, a member of the class of 1990, from his days of playing soccer at St. Pius X. "Ben was a member of the 1988 soccer team - the first St. Pius team to win the state championship. He was to be capitan of the 1989 soccer team," remembered Jorge. But Ben died in an accident on spring break in 1988.

The student body petitioned to have the field, which at the time was not yet developed for soccer, named for Ben. Coach Tristani  said, "A hundred percent of the students signed it," remembered Coach Tristani.

Ben's parents, Miguel and Maria, and other members of the Rios Family presented Coach Tristani with a large photograph of Ben playing soccer.

Pius Grads Take Fight Against Hunger to UNM

Fight Against Hunger Logo

Kids Against Hunger goes to UNM

The group Kids Against hunger was started at St. Pius X High School in 2009 by Alison Frumkin (student) and Alicia Eiler (Director of Community Service). In 2010, after the earthqake struck Haiti, the Kids Against Hunger corporate office challenged SPX to raise $45,000.00 to package 285,000 meals. Student leaders Alison Frumkin and Jaclyn Serru took on this challenge along with the rest of the committee and fundraised greatly all year.

In 2011, both of these ladies graduated and left a huge impact on the school and the Archdiocese of Santa Fe to truly embrace the concept of Service Learning.

In 2012, these two ladies wanted to continue this project at a University level and began the awesome project at The University of New Mexico. You can view their success stories at

If you wish to get involved with the St. Pius X High School Kids Against Hunger program, contact Alicia Eiler at 505-831-8416.
